Foes means enemies in the original Greek. Families that are composed entirely of Christians are rare. Even if both parents and all of the children in a family are saved, they will have relatives that are not. How should we deal with the enemies in our families? We should love them and pray for them. Matthew 5:43-47: Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. 44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; 45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? 47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? We will be exposed more often and for longer periods of time to the enemies in our families than to enemies that are strangers. We will have more opportunities to love them and they will have more opportunities to see our sin and be critical. They will also have more opportunities to hinder our ministry than strangers. God has permitted them to be in our families for a reason. 1 Timothy 5:8: But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.
If the enemies in our households need to hear the gospel, that is their greatest need and we are worse than infidels if we do not see to it that they hear it. |
